Classic Instruments-GLSSA Opens 2021 Series with a Split and a Win

Great Lakes Stock Super/Stock Association sponsored by Classic Instruments started 2021 with a pair of races at the recently updated Mid Michigan Motorplex. Despite being one of the first race weekends in the Great Lakes area, there was a strong turnout with 50 racers entered on Saturday and 45 on Sunday.

After two qualifying runs on Saturday, Sunday Winner Brad Zaskowski took the AW Race Cars #1 spot in his SS/J Camaro. Eliminations got started at 6:00 PM

After 3 rounds of racing on Saturday evening, the 50-car field was whittled down to 7 cars. Round 4 pairings were the SS/J Camaro of Brad Zaskowski and Ron Kerns in his SS/GA 67 Nova, Gary Jacob in his N/SS 65 Plymouth vs Zach Running in the SS/MA Super Sleeper Olds, Al Wisnewski in his SS/CS Sunfire vs. Kevin Zaskowski and Rick Jacob in his 8 second 145 MPH N/SS 64 Plymouth had the bye run. And then the drops of rain started to appear on the cars. A quick check of weather Apps showed that more showers were on the way and the remaining 7 drivers decided to split the $3,000+ purse that remained.

Sunday turned out to be a perfect day for racing despite the headwinds that cycled between 8 and 20 MPH. GLSSA Series Qualifying is based on reaction times and Doug Wright took the AW Race Cars #1 spot with a nearly perfect .003 light to earn the bye run in Round 1.

By Round 2, the racing had already tightened up with John Nechiporchik, Don Turk, Kyle Jeltema, Kevin Zaskowski, and Brad Zaskowski all running Dead On to advance to round 3. Six racers made the call for round 4 with Brad Zaskowski over Kyle Jeltema in a battle of Stick-Shift Super Stockers; Jimmy Ronzello in the Varsity Lincoln Cobra Jet running dead on to just nip the COPO Parts Direct Camaro of John Nechiporchik; and #1 qualifier Doug Wright breaking a transmission after Victor Long red-lighted. With Wright broke, that left Brad Z to face Jimmy Ronzello in the final. Like much of the racing all day, the final looked to be a great race as both racers had been sharp on the tree and had their dial-ins figured out. While Ronzello was nearly perfect on the tree with a .004 reaction time, he took a bit too much stripe to break out by .005 vs. Zaskowski's .002 under 10.118. Along with the $2,000 cash win, Brad Zaskowski picked up awards from Classic Instruments, VP Racing Fuels, and Jeg's.

GLSSA is back in action on May 15 at US 131 Motorsports Park with race #3 of the series and returns to Mid Michigan Motorplex on June 12-13 for another double race weekend.
